How to Create a Google Drive Direct Download Link

When sharing files online, a Google Drive direct download link will help you save your recipients a lot of time. Google Drive has many awesome capabilities. From creating content and storing it, to saving this content and sharing with others, Google Drive is an essential tool for any freelancer. In this article, I will show you two methods on how to create a direct download link for a Google Drive file. This is great if you offer digital assets on a website, or want a client to download a file that can’t be easily sent over via email due to size limitations.

I used this method on my blog post “Top 5 Best Performing Google Display Ad Sizes with Templates” to help visitors download Photoshop .PSD template files for various digital ad sizes.

Before showing you the two methods, you first need get your Google Drive file link set up properly. Do this:

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Right-click on your file.
  3. Click on Get Link.
  4. Below the link, make sure your file is available for Anyone with the link.
  5. Click on Copy link.

Now that you have the link, let’s begin.

  1. Paste your Google Drive file link on a notepad so that you can edit it.
  2. Your link should be similar to this one:
  3. Remove the text file/d/ from the link and replace it with uc?export=download&id=
  4. Now remove /view?usp=sharing. This is what it should look like afterwards:

Anyone who has access to the link can download the file by just clicking on the link.

If you don’t want to change the link manually, you can use an online generator. To convert your link, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Do a Google search for “Google Drive Direct Link Generator website”. Here’s two websites I’ve used with this method:
    1. https://techieblogging.com/google-drive-link-to-direct-download-link/
    2. https://sites.google.com/site/gdocs2direct/
  2. Paste the link into the Enter your sharing URL box.
  3. Click on Create Direct Link.
  4. Copy the link and start sharing.

In Conclusion

Anyone who has access to the link you created using these two methods can download the file by just clicking on the link. You can use this link and embed it on a website so users can simply download the file by clicking a text on a blog post or button.
